Catedral de Mallorca (La Seu)
Song of the Sibyl at Palma Cathedral
View in the app · free, no sign-upOn the night of 24 December, at Matines (Christmas Eve mass), churches across Mallorca perform the Cant de la Sibil·la, a medieval chant announcing the Last Judgement. Mallorca and L'Alguer in Sardinia are the only places in Europe where it has survived without a break since the Middle Ages, and UNESCO listed it as intangible heritage of humanity in 2010. In the Cathedral, Matines begins at 23:00: the Sibyl, in a robe and holding a raised sword, walks through the church singing alone, with the organ between verses; the Cant de l'Àngel and the Sermó de la Calenda are also sung. It runs until after midnight. Tip: La Seu fills up, so arrive early and dress warmly; if there is no room, almost every parish on the island sings it that night, some earlier in the evening.
