Practical
Money, cards and payments
The currency is the euro and almost everywhere you can pay by card or phone, even on buses, in taxis and most bars. Still, carry some cash for markets, small beach bars and inland villages.
To withdraw money, use bank ATMs (inside or next to a branch) rather than independent machines in tourist areas, which charge high fees. And if an ATM or card terminal offers to charge you "in your currency", always choose euros: their exchange rate is worse.
In 2026 you can also pay by card or phone on TIB buses and, since this year, across the whole EMT Palma fleet, so you don't need coins to get around. Where cash still rules is at weekly market stalls, some village bars and small beach kiosks; carry small notes, because with a €50 note first thing in the morning they may not have change.
Tipping isn't compulsory. In a bar people usually leave the change or round up, and in a restaurant with good service a little more, in cash or by saying so when you pay by card. When withdrawing money, the ATM may offer to charge you in your own currency: always choose euros, just as at card terminals. And if a foreign card fails on a contactless terminal, try inserting it with your PIN before assuming it doesn't work.
Frequently asked questions
Do you need cash in Mallorca?
Not much. Almost everything can be paid by card or phone, including buses. Carry a little cash in small notes for weekly markets, some village bars and small beach kiosks, where cards are sometimes not accepted.
Do you tip in Mallorca?
It isn't compulsory and it isn't added to the bill. In bars people round up or leave the change, and in restaurants, if service was good, a little more, in cash or when paying by card.
Should I pay in euros or my own currency in Mallorca?
In euros. When an ATM or card terminal offers to charge you in your currency, it applies its own exchange rate, which is usually worse than your bank's. Always choose the euro option.
