Practical
Tourist tax (ecotax)
Has it gone up? No: as of 24 October 2026, the Sustainable Tourism Tax rates haven't changed since 2019. There are proposals to raise it (in September 2026 the PSIB registered a bill for +€2 per night, Més per Palma wants it doubled in Palma and the tourism minister has spoken in favour), but none has been approved: the rise was left out of the tourism containment decree, and the tax on hire cars hasn't been applied either.
How it works: you pay per night and per person over 16. Your accommodation collects it, usually at check-in or check-out, and it's normally not included in the booking price. It ranges from €1 to €4 per night (plus VAT) depending on the type of accommodation: the top rate applies to 4 and 5-star hotels. In the low season (November to April) you pay a quarter, and from the ninth night in the same place, half. The money goes to environmental, heritage and sustainable tourism projects.
An example to give you an idea: two adults, seven nights in November in a 4-star hotel. The rate for that category is €3 per person per night, but in the low season it's 75% less, so €0.75 per person per night: €10.50 in total, plus VAT. Children under 16 don't pay. Stays in hostales, campsites and hostels have the lowest rate, €1 a night.
What confuses people most is where it's paid. If you book through a platform, the price almost never includes the tax: the accommodation charges it on arrival or departure and should give you a receipt. Holiday rentals work the same way, though some owners ask for it in advance. There are no local surcharges: the rate is the same on all the islands.
