Plugs and voltage

In Mallorca, as in the rest of Spain, sockets are type C and F (the European two round pin plugs) and the supply is 230 V, 50 Hz. If you're coming from the UK, Ireland, the US or elsewhere outside continental Europe, you'll need an adapter. Phone and laptop chargers usually accept 100-240 V, but check 110 V hair dryers and straighteners. If you forget, hardware stores, bazaars and airport shops sell adapters.

Before you pack, check the label on your charger: if it says «INPUT 100-240V ~ 50/60Hz», it works here with a simple plug adapter. What usually causes trouble are 110-120 V hair dryers, straighteners and shavers from the US or Canada: even if the plug fits, they can burn out at 230 V. Those need a voltage converter, or simply buy a cheap one on the island.

From the UK or Ireland your plug is type G and you need an adapter; from Germany, Austria or most of continental Europe the Schuko plug fits straight in. In some older houses and country fincas the sockets are recessed into the wall and bulky adapters will not go in: a slim adapter or a European power strip solves it and lets you charge several things at once.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a plug adapter for Mallorca from the UK?

Yes. Sockets in Mallorca are type C and F, with two round pins, while UK plugs are type G. A UK-to-European adapter is enough for phones and laptops, because the voltage, 230 V, is effectively the same.

Can I use an American hair dryer in Mallorca?

Only if it is dual voltage (100-240 V). Devices rated 110-120 V will be damaged by the local 230 V even with a plug adapter. You would need a voltage converter or buy a dryer in Mallorca; many places to stay already provide one.
