Festa de l'Estendard (31 December, Palma)
The Festa de l'Estendard is held in Palma every 31 December and commemorates the entry of Jaume I's troops into the city on 31 December 1229, which ended Muslim rule. It isn't New Year's Eve or Sant Sebastià (Palma's patron saint, in January): it's the festival of the conquest.
What happens: there's a ceremony in Plaça de Cort with the Estendard, the standard; then a parade to the Cathedral with music and folk groups, and a solemn Mass. Afterwards «La Colcada» is recited and there's dancing. The day before, 30 December, flowers are laid at the statue of Jaume I.
