Golf in Mallorca
Mallorca has around twenty golf courses all over the island and you can play all year round, although October to May is most pleasant. Some of the most highly rated: Son Gual, near Palma, considered one of the best in Spain; Alcanada, by the sea facing a lighthouse in Alcúdia; Pula Golf and Golf Son Servera on the east coast; Son Termes, among the mountains in Bunyola; Vall d'Or, with sea views in the southeast; and Canyamel, near Cala Rajada.
Book tee times in advance in high season and ask about multi-course packages, which are cheaper.
Golf season in Mallorca runs opposite to beach season: autumn, winter and spring, when temperatures are pleasant and high-season green fees apply from October to May. In July and August people tee off early or late because of the heat, and rates are often lower. Depending on the course and time of year, 18 holes cost roughly €70 to well over €150; compare multi-course packages and afternoon rates.
Bring your handicap certificate, as the better courses ask for it (Son Gual, for instance, sets a limit of 28 for men and 36 for women), and stick to golf dress, so no collarless T-shirts. For a sea view, Alcanada, designed by Robert Trent Jones Jr. and opened in 2003, sits on the Bay of Alcúdia with its lighthouse in sight from most holes. To play several courses without much driving, the east coast has Pula, Son Servera and Canyamel close together.
Frequently asked questions
When is the best time to play golf in Mallorca?
October to May: mild temperatures and courses at their best, though that is also when green fees are highest and tee times fill up. Summer middays are very hot, so play early or late, when rates are usually lower.
