Opening hours: meals and shops

Mallorca runs on Spanish time: lunch is between 1:30 and 3:30 pm and dinner from 8-8:30 pm; many kitchens close at 10:30-11 pm. In the villages, quite a few restaurants close one day a week and kitchens shut between lunch and dinner.

Village shops usually open 10 am to 1:30 pm and 5 to 8 pm; in Palma, city-centre shops and malls stay open all day. On Sundays almost everything is closed except in tourist areas and some supermarkets. And from November to March many coastal hotels, restaurants and beach clubs close for the season, so check before you go.

For food shopping, markets work in the morning: Palma's Mercat de l'Olivar is open Monday to Saturday until early afternoon and closed on Sundays, and the weekly village markets (Sineu on Wednesday, Santa Maria del Camí or Valldemossa on Sunday) pack up around midday. To see them at their liveliest, go before 11 am.

On Sundays in Palma, shops in the historic centre are allowed to open because it is a designated tourist area, but many small ones don't. Pharmacies close at midday and at night, although each area has one on duty: the rota is posted on the door of every pharmacy. And local holidays vary from town to town, so on an ordinary Tuesday you may find shops shut for the patron saint's day.

Frequently asked questions

Are shops open on Sundays in Mallorca?

Few. In central Palma and some tourist areas on the coast, many shops are allowed to open, as are some supermarkets. In inland villages almost everything closes on Sundays, except the weekly morning markets.

How do you find an open pharmacy in Mallorca at night?

Every pharmacy posts on its door which one is on duty (farmacia de guardia) that night or Sunday in the area. The Pharmacists' Association and local press also publish the rota. In a medical emergency, call 112.
