Practical
Internet, SIM cards and roaming
If your plan is from the European Union, you use data and calls in Mallorca as you do at home, with no roaming fees (within your provider's fair use policy). From outside the EU, the easiest option is a travel eSIM you activate before you leave, or a prepaid SIM from Movistar, Vodafone or Orange (they'll ask for your passport).
Coverage is good across most of the island, though it can drop in some coves and parts of the Serra de Tramuntana such as Sa Calobra or Lluc: download offline maps before you go. Almost all accommodation and cafés have free wifi.
The EU's roam like at home rules have been extended to 2032 and also cover plans from Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein. The UK is no longer included: since Brexit each British operator decides for itself, and some charge a daily fee for using your phone in Spain while others include it in certain plans. Check your provider's website before you travel, because over a week the difference adds up.
In the Serra de Tramuntana coverage comes and goes: download offline maps before heading to Sa Calobra or Lluc, and tell someone your route if you are walking alone. 112 is free across the EU and your phone will try any available network, even if it is not your operator's. For payments or online banking, use your own data rather than public wifi.
Frequently asked questions
Will I pay roaming charges in Mallorca on a UK plan?
It depends on your operator. Since Brexit, the EU's no-surcharge roaming rules do not apply to British providers: some charge a daily fee for using data and calls in Spain, while others include it in certain plans. Check their website before you travel.
Until when is roaming free in the European Union?
Until 2032. In 2022 the EU extended roam like at home: with a plan from an EU country, Norway, Iceland or Liechtenstein you use your minutes and data in Mallorca as you would at home, within your operator's fair use policy.
Can I call 112 in Mallorca without signal from my operator?
Yes, 112 is free across the EU and your phone will use any available network for the call. But in some gorges of the Serra de Tramuntana there is none at all, so before a hike tell someone your route and when you expect to be back.
