Alfabia and Raixa gardens

In Bunyola, on the way to Sóller, there are two historic gardens worth a stop. The Alfabia Gardens, of Moorish origin, are a shady oasis with fountains, hidden water jets, palm trees, bamboo and a wisteria pergola, plus the manor house with its antique furniture. Raixa, a few kilometres away, is an Italian-style estate with a monumental staircase, a large pond and views of the Serra de Tramuntana.

They're perfect for a quiet morning or a hot day, and combine well with Sóller or the Sóller train, which passes close by.

Check the calendar before you go, because the two gardens keep very different hours. Alfabia closes in winter, from November to mid-February, and is open daily the rest of the year. Raixa, owned by the Consell de Mallorca, opens Tuesday to Saturday mornings, 10 am to 3 pm, and entry is free; it's closed on Mondays, Sundays and public holidays. So doing both works best between Tuesday and Saturday, starting with Raixa.

At Raixa allow a couple of hours for the staircase, the pond, the exhibition, the olive mill and the viewpoint. If you come on the Sóller train, you can get off at Bunyola, look round the village (there's a small market on the square on Saturdays) and carry on by taxi to either garden. Alfabia is right by the Sóller road, before the tunnel, with its own car park.
