Tipping in Mallorca

Tipping isn't mandatory and service is already included in the price, so nobody will mind if you don't. Still, it's customary to round up or leave something when the service was good: in a café, the small change; in a restaurant, 5 to 10% if you were happy. In taxis people usually round up, and on guided tours a few euros per person are much appreciated. If you pay by card, the easiest way is to leave the tip in cash on the table.

In Spain menu prices must include VAT, and the consumer authorities consider a separate cover or service charge illegal. Bread or nibbles can only be charged if you are told beforehand and the price is on the menu; if they appear on the bill without warning, you can ask for them to be removed. So what you see on the menu is what you pay, and a tip really is an extra.

Many card machines have no tip option, which is why people usually leave it in cash; if one does offer it on screen, choosing no tip is perfectly normal. In a hotel, a few euros for the cleaning staff at the end of your stay are appreciated, as is something for the skipper on a boat trip you enjoyed. And for a set lunch menu, leaving the small change is enough.

Frequently asked questions

How much should you tip in a restaurant in Mallorca?

It is not compulsory. If you enjoyed it, people usually round up or leave 5 to 10% in cash; for a set lunch or at a bar, the small change. Leaving more is generous, and leaving nothing is not rude.

Can restaurants in Spain charge for cover or bread?

Not for cover or service: the consumer authorities consider that an illegal charge, since it is deemed included. Bread or nibbles only if you are told beforehand and the price is on the menu. If it appears on the bill without warning, you can ask for it to be removed or file a complaint.

Do you tip taxi drivers in Mallorca?

It is not expected. People usually round up the fare or leave the change, especially if the driver helped with the luggage. If you pay by card, nobody expects you to add anything.
