Beaches & sea
An early-morning swim
There's nothing like a swim before the crowds arrive: between 7 and 9 am the water is calm, the beaches freshly cleaned and parking is easy. For a quick dip, pick a sandy beach near where you're staying, with a gentle entry and a promenade, and save the coves with a long walk down for when you have the whole morning. There are no lifeguards yet at that hour, they usually start around 10, so don't swim far out and check the flag if there is one. In spring and autumn the water is cooler than it looks: go in slowly and bring a big towel.
