Getting around
Palma's low emission zone (ZBE)
Central Palma, inside the Avingudes ring road and the seafront, is a low emission zone (ZBE) with cameras that read number plates.
- Until 31 December 2026, cars with a DGT B, C, ECO or 0 label may enter. A rental car with Spanish plates usually has one, but check the windscreen or ask the rental company.
- With foreign plates you need a Mobipalma authorisation requested at least 5 days in advance (valid for 30 days; for a rental car, with a copy of the contract).
- From 1 January 2027 only C, ECO and 0 may enter: B-label cars stay out.
Entering without permission means a €200 fine. You can reach the public car parks in the centre (Parc de la Mar, Plaça Major, Via Roma, Olivar) without authorisation along the signed routes. The old town is also an ACIRE zone: even with a label, only residents and authorised vehicles may enter.
What people mix up most is the difference between the ZBE and the ACIRE zones. The ZBE is the whole centre inside the Avingudes and the seafront, and lets in cars with the right label. ACIRE zones are camera-controlled old-town streets that only residents, deliveries, taxis and authorised vehicles may enter: a label doesn't help, and entering without permission also costs €200. If your hotel is inside, ask beforehand whether it registers your number plate.
For a day in Palma, the simplest option is to park in a public car park along the signed routes (Parc de la Mar, Plaça Major, Via Roma or Olivar) or outside the Avingudes and walk in. If you park on the street, the blue zone (ORA) is paid Monday to Friday from 9:00 to 14:30 and 16:30 to 20:00, and on Saturday mornings; inside the Avingudes it costs €1.45 an hour, for up to two hours.
Frequently asked questions
Can I drive a rental car into central Palma?
With Spanish plates and a DGT B, C, ECO or 0 label, yes, until 31 December 2026; from 2027 only C, ECO and 0. The ACIRE streets of the old town stay closed even with a label. Check the windscreen sticker or ask the rental company.
How do I get a Mobipalma authorisation for a foreign car?
Apply to Mobipalma at least 5 days before you drive in; it's valid for 30 days, and for a rental car you attach a copy of the contract. Without it, cameras read your plate and the fine is €200. You can reach the centre's public car parks without authorisation along the signed routes.
How much does blue zone parking cost in Palma?
Inside the Avingudes and in Cala Major, €1.45 an hour for up to two hours. It's paid Monday to Friday 9:00–14:30 and 16:30–20:00, and Saturday 9:00–14:30, at the meter or with the MobiAPParc app.
Do I need a Spanish emissions sticker to drive into central Palma?
A foreign sticker is not enough. The cameras read number plates, and a car with foreign plates needs a Mobipalma authorisation, requested at least 5 days in advance and valid for 30 days; for a rental car, with a copy of the contract. Without it, the fine is €200.
