Sant Bartomeu and the Cossiers in Montuïri
View in the app · free, no sign-upThe Cossiers of Montuïri are the heart of Sant Bartomeu: six dancers and the Dama (Lady, also played by a man), with the Dimoni Banya Verda (green-horned devil), who clears the way, chases the young people and in the end gets trodden on by the Dama. In 2025 they marked 275 years of documented history, and they are the only cossiers group on the island that has never stopped dancing (Ramon Llull prize, 2012). They come out only three times a year, all in August. On the eve, the 23rd, they leave Plaça Major at 18:30: first dance in front of the town hall, the Dimoni bursts in and, after dancing at the rectory, they escort the authorities to Completes (evening prayer) in the church, with tunes like 'Flor de Murta'. On the 24th, pipers' dawn round at 9:00, cossiers out at 10:00 and mass at 12:00. Tip: the square gets packed, especially when the eve falls on a weekend; come early.
