Cova dels Voltors
Ancient cave dwelling with breathtaking valley views—a unique hiking reward.
View in the app · free, no sign-upAlso called Son Montserrat cave or des Voltor, it's a partly natural, partly hand-dug cavity with three chambers divided by pillars carved into the rock, from the Talaiotic period. Over the centuries it was used as a livestock shelter and as a sandstone quarry for local houses. It has been a protected heritage site (BIC) since 1966, and in October 2025 Petra town council bought it, with help from the Consell, to clear it, signpost it and open a path. You reach it along Petra's country lanes, often as part of a walk that also takes in sa Valleta.
