Getting around
Renting a car in Mallorca
To explore coves, mountain villages and viewpoints, a car gives you total freedom: there are places the bus doesn't reach, or reaches twice a day. Book ahead in summer and choose a small car, as village streets and car parks are narrow. Check the fuel policy (full-to-full is best), the insurance excess and the deposit they block on your card: many companies want a credit card, not a debit card. Take photos of the car when you pick it up and when you return it. If you're only getting around the city, you don't need one: parking in the centre is expensive and tricky. Here's a road trip to break it in.
Since 27 February 2026 almost all of Sóller's town centre has been a camera-controlled low emission zone: a rental car that is not electric has to stay in the car parks on the outskirts, and the minimum fine is €200. In Palma, the centre inside the Avingudes ring road is also a low emission zone; rental cars with Spanish plates usually carry a DGT label, but check. The ACIRE streets of the old town are a separate matter: only residents and authorised vehicles may enter, so if your hotel is inside, ask whether it registers your number plate.
From 15 May to 18 October the Formentor road is restricted from 10:00 to 22:00, and only the TIB bus goes on to the lighthouse. If you are travelling with children, anyone under 135 cm must use an approved child seat or booster: ask for one when you book, because they run out in August.
Frequently asked questions
Can I drive a rental car into the centre of Palma?
Yes, if it has a DGT B, C, ECO or 0 label, which rental cars with Spanish plates usually have (until 31 December 2026; from 2027, only C, ECO and 0). The ACIRE streets of the old town are for residents and authorised vehicles only: entering without permission costs €200.
Can I drive a rental car into Sóller town centre?
No, unless it is electric or your accommodation in the centre has authorised it. Since 27 February 2026 almost all of central Sóller has been a camera-controlled low emission zone. Leave the car in the car parks on the outskirts and walk in; the minimum fine is €200.
Do I need a child seat in a rental car in Spain?
Yes. Children under 135 cm must travel in an approved child restraint, preferably in the back. Rental companies hire them out by the day: book one together with the car, especially in summer, or bring your own.
