Weather & seasons

Mallorca in winter

Winter is Mallorca at its quietest and most local. Many days are sunny, around 15 °C at midday, and it's the best season for hiking the Serra de Tramuntana, cycling (pro teams come to train) or exploring Palma without queues: museums, markets, sunny terraces and the Christmas lights.

January brings the Sant Antoni and Sant Sebastià fire festivals, and from late January into February the almond trees bloom. Good to know: the sea is 14-15 °C, many hotels, restaurants and beach clubs in the coastal resorts (Alcúdia, Cala d'Or, Cala Millor…) close from November to March, and there are fewer buses and boat trips. Palma, Sóller, Pollença and the inland villages stay lively all year.

January's festivals happen at night. On the eve of Sant Antoni, 16 January, villages such as sa Pobla, Artà and Manacor light bonfires in their squares, with dimonis (devils), music and sobrassada and botifarró grilled on the embers; in Palma, the revetla of Sant Sebastià on the night of the 19th fills the centre with bonfires and stages. In November, Inca's Dijous Bo, on 19 November in 2026, is the biggest fair of the year.

Winter has practical perks too: the tourist tax drops 75% from November to April, and you can drive the Formentor road all the way to the lighthouse, because the restrictions only apply from May to October. On the other hand, some places close: the Alfabia Gardens from November to mid-February, and Sa Dragonera is shut for works on its jetty. For hiking, days are short: start early and take a warm layer, as the mountains cool fast once the sun drops.
