Art museums and galleries

To see art in Mallorca, almost everything is in Palma, within walking distance:

Museums:

  • Es Baluard: contemporary art inside a Renaissance bastion, with terraces over the bay.
  • Fundació Miró Mallorca (Cala Major): the studios where Miró worked in his last years.
  • Fundación Juan March: an 18th-century palace with avant-garde art, next to Plaça Major.
  • CaixaForum: the old Modernista Gran Hotel on Plaça Weyler, with exhibitions.
  • Casal Solleric (the Born): a Baroque palace turned art centre, with one of Palma's most photographed courtyards.

Old-town galleries:

  • Galería Pelaires, in an old palace; Gerhardt Braun Gallery, on Sant Feliu; Gallery RED, on Plaça Chopin; Gallery Can Boni, and 6A, a gallery and hand-printing studio.

They're a good plan for the hottest hours or a rainy day. Several are free or have free-entry days: check each website before you go.

To save money, it's worth knowing what's free. Fundación Juan March, next to Plaça Major, is free and opens Monday to Saturday (closed Sundays and holidays). Casal Solleric, on the Born, doesn't charge either, and Can Balaguer, on Carrer de la Unió, shows the rooms of a stately townhouse for free. At Es Baluard, on Fridays each visitor decides what to pay, and under-12s go free; it's closed on Mondays.

A walking route that works: Es Baluard in the morning, down the Born to Casal Solleric, then Fundación Juan March and CaixaForum, all within twenty minutes' walk. The Fundació Miró is apart, in Cala Major: better by bus or taxi, and allow at least an hour and a half for the studios and the garden. Almost every museum closes on Mondays, so don't save this plan for that day.
