What to take home from Mallorca
The best souvenirs from Mallorca are things you eat or use:
- Food: an ensaimada in its octagonal box, vacuum-packed sobrasada, PDO Oli de Mallorca olive oil, Es Trenc flor de sal, almonds, local cheese and wine from Binissalem or Pla i Llevant.
- Drinks: Mallorcan hierbas or palo.
- Crafts: Gordiola blown glass, "llengües" fabric (the traditional Mallorcan print), ceramics, "siurells" (little clay whistle figures), palm baskets, Manacor pearls and shoes or leather from Inca.
Remember that olive oil, wine and spirits over 100 ml must go in checked luggage or be bought after airport security.
Where you buy makes a big difference to price and quality. For food, the markets (l'Olivar and Santa Catalina in Palma, or the weekly village markets, such as Sineu's on Wednesdays) and the shops of cooperatives and olive mills. For olive oil, look for the Oli de Mallorca Denomination of Origin seal on the label. Buy the ensaimada on your last day from a bakery you trust; it keeps a couple of days in its box.
For crafts, go to the source: Gordiola glass is blown at its factory on the Manacor road, near Algaida; llengües fabric is woven in workshops in Pollença, Santa Maria or Lloseta, and Inca has factory shops for shoes and leather. Siurells are sold at markets and in Marratxí, the potters' town. Be wary of cheap magnets and figures in souvenir shops, which are often made elsewhere.
