Approximate average maximum temperatures in Palma:

  • January and February: 15 °C · March: 17 °C · April: 20 °C
  • May: 24 °C · June: 28 °C · July and August: 31 °C
  • September: 28 °C · October: 24 °C · November: 19 °C · December: 16 °C

Winter nights drop to 5-8 °C, and summer nights rarely fall below 20-22 °C. It doesn't rain much: most rain falls between September and November, sometimes in heavy storms, and in winter; summer is very dry. The Serra de Tramuntana is cooler and wetter, and the interior is hotter in summer and colder on winter nights.

For swimming, look at the sea temperature, which lags behind the air: according to the Puertos del Estado series, the sea is about 17 °C in May, 21 °C in June, 24 °C in July, 26 °C in August, around 25 °C in September and 22 °C in October. In February and March it drops to about 14 °C. That's why September and early October are among the best months for a swim: the water is still warm and there are fewer people.

What surprises people most is the contrast on the same day: in spring and autumn it can be T-shirt weather in the sun in Palma and cold at Lluc or on Puig Major. October is the wettest month at the airport, with short but heavy storms. In winter the days are mild and very bright, ideal for walking in the Serra; in July and August, keep hikes for first thing.
