Weather & seasons

Best time to visit Mallorca

For most people the best months are May, June, September and October: warm without being stifling, the sea is good for swimming (especially from June) and there are fewer crowds than in high summer.

  • July and August: intense heat (30-35 °C), the sea at its best, but busy beaches, more traffic and high prices.
  • Spring (March-April): ideal for hiking, cycling and villages; the water is still cold.
  • Winter (November-February): mild (around 15 °C by day), quiet and perfect for Palma, the mountains and the almond blossom (late January-February), although many coastal hotels and restaurants close.

If you want beach time without the crowds, aim for the second half of September.

The calendar matters too. In January, the Sant Antoni festivities fill villages such as sa Pobla, Manacor and Artà with bonfires; in May, Sóller celebrates Es Firó; and on 2 August Pollença re-enacts its Moors and Christians battle. Out of season, staying is cheaper: from November to April the tourist tax is 75% lower. On the other hand, many coastal hotels and restaurants close in winter, so base yourself in Palma or a town that's lively all year.

And one summer rule: from 15 May to 18 October, 10 am to 10 pm, you can only reach the Formentor lighthouse by bus, taxi or bike. As for the water, the average sea temperature around Palma peaks in August at about 26 °C and drops to around 14.5 °C in January; in June and October it is usually around 21–23 °C.
