Getting around
Parking in Porto Cristo and the Caves of Drach
In Porto Cristo there are open-air car parks on the streets behind the harbour, several of them free, and an underground car park on Plaça de s'Aljub, a few minutes from the promenade and the beach.
For the Caves of Drach, on the edge of town, there's a car park next to the entrance on the carretera de les Coves. Visits run in timed slots: arrive 20-30 minutes early, especially in summer, when the coaches arrive and the road gets jammed.
The Caves of Drach have a free car park next to the entrance. The visit takes about an hour: you walk roughly a kilometre of galleries, with steps and handrails, and end up seated by Lake Martel for a short live classical concert and, if you like, a brief boat ride. Buy your ticket online: it's cheaper and it guarantees your time slot, which is what sells out in summer.
If you come on a Sunday, Porto Cristo has its market and the centre fills up sooner: leave the car in the upper streets and walk down. The Coves dels Hams are on the Manacor road, a few minutes away, if you want to do two caves in one day. And if you're thinking of going on to Cala Varques, be warned: it has no car park, the track is closed with a barrier and there's a yellow line on the road, so you'll have to walk from wherever you can park legally.
