Getting around
Palma city buses (EMT)
Palma's city buses are run by EMT and reach almost every neighbourhood and the city beaches (Can Pere Antoni, Ciutat Jardí, Platja de Palma, Cala Major). You don't need to buy a ticket: just tap your bank card or phone on the reader when you get on. For non-residents a ride costs about €2-3.
Local tips: check routes and arrival times in the EMT app or on Google Maps. The airport line (A1) and the buses to Platja de Palma are packed in summer; if one is full, the next one usually comes soon. The red buses you see around town are TIB, the intercity buses to the villages.
Paying by card is easy, but each passenger needs their own card or phone: if there are several of you, you can't all tap in with the same one. Get on at the front door, hold the card to the reader and wait for the green light. Paying the driver in cash is still possible, ideally with the exact fare. Note that EMT is approving new fares for non-residents in late 2026, so check the current price on its website or at the stop before you travel.
Around town, the most useful routes are the ones from Plaça d'Espanya, where the Estació Intermodal for the island's trains and buses is, to the centre, Portixol and the beaches to the east. From the airport into town, the A1 stops at Plaça d'Espanya and on the seafront, with room for luggage. On Sundays and at night there are fewer buses, so check the timetable first.
Frequently asked questions
Can you pay by card on Palma buses?
Yes. EMT buses have readers for contactless bank cards and phones when you board. Each passenger needs their own means of payment. You can still pay the driver in cash, ideally with the exact fare.
How do I get from Palma airport to the city centre by bus?
Take EMT line A1, which leaves from the arrivals level and runs into central Palma, stopping at Plaça d'Espanya next to the station for the island's trains and buses. It has space for luggage and you pay when you board.
