Hiking tips for Mallorca
The best time to hike is October to May. In summer, set off at dawn, avoid the middle of the day and carry at least 2 litres of water per person: there are hardly any springs or shade in the mountains. More tips:
- Wear hiking boots: many paths are loose stone and slippery.
- Many trails cross private estates: stay on the route, close gates and respect no-entry signs.
- Check the forecast: after rain, gorges like Torrent de Pareis are dangerous, and with a strong north wind it gets cold up high.
- Phone coverage drops in many valleys: download the map and tell someone your route. Emergencies: 112.
To start with, easy and rewarding walks: Castell d'Alaró, Talaia d'Alcúdia, Puig de Maria (Pollença), La Trapa from Sant Elm or the Biniaraix gorge.
