Getting around
Ferries to Ibiza, Menorca and mainland Spain
Ferries leave Palma port for Ibiza (2 to 4 hours depending on the boat) and for Barcelona and Valencia (about 7-8 hours; there are overnight sailings with cabins). For Menorca, the shortest crossing is from Port d'Alcúdia to Ciutadella: 1 to 2 hours depending on the boat, so you can even do it as a day trip. The main companies are Baleària and Trasmed, plus GNV on the Barcelona route.
Tips: in summer and on long weekends book early, especially if you take a car (if it's a rental, check that your contract allows you to take it off the island). Be at the port at least 45-60 minutes before departure, a bit more with a car.
Between Alcúdia and Ciutadella there are fast boats of around an hour and conventional ferries of about two and a half hours, run by Baleària and Trasmed all year. For a day in Menorca, take the first fast boat and leave the car in Alcúdia: Ciutadella is easy on foot. From Palma there are also ferries to Dénia, and there's no direct boat to Formentera: you go to Ibiza and take the ferry from there to La Savina.
In Palma port not all ferries leave from the same place: there are several ferry terminals along the quay and each company uses its own. Check the terminal number on your ticket before you set off, as they are quite far apart. In summer, sailings with a car and Friday and Sunday departures sell out first; as a foot passenger in low season, booking a few days ahead is usually enough.
