Alcúdia: walled town and beaches

Alcúdia has two sides. The old town is enclosed by medieval walls you can walk along, and just outside are the ruins of Pollentia, Mallorca's most important Roman city, with its small theatre. On Tuesday and Sunday mornings there's a market in the old town streets.

The other side is the beach: miles of fine sand and shallow water between Port d'Alcúdia and Platja de Muro, perfect with kids. For something wilder, hike up the Talaia d'Alcúdia (views over both bays) or head to Alcanada beach, facing its lighthouse. Next door is the s'Albufera natural park, great for birdwatching.

To see Alcúdia without the crowds, start with the old town early: park outside the walls, go in through the Porta de Mallorca or the Porta del Moll and climb onto the wall walk. Right next to it are the ruins of Pollentia; one ticket covers the site and the Monographic Museum on Carrer de Sant Jaume, bought at the entrance to the excavations. Allow about an hour for the ruins and the Roman theatre.

The market sets up on Tuesday and Sunday mornings, roughly 8am to 1.30pm, inside the old town and along the walls; Sundays and summer days get busy, so arrive early. From Palma, TIB bus 351 leaves the Estació Intermodal and takes just over an hour. In the afternoon Alcúdia changes character: the beach at Port d'Alcúdia, a stroll out to Alcanada or the climb up the Talaia, and s'Albufera for birdwatching at dusk.

Frequently asked questions

What day is Alcúdia market?

Tuesday and Sunday mornings, roughly 8am to 1.30pm, in the streets of the old town and along the walls. The Sunday market is the busier of the two, particularly in high season, so get there early if you want to park nearby.

Can you walk on Alcúdia's old town walls?

Yes. Several stretches of the medieval walls have an open wall walk you can follow on foot, looking over the rooftops of the old town. It is free and fits easily into the same morning as the Roman ruins of Pollentia, just outside the gates.

How do I get from Palma to Alcúdia by bus?

TIB line 351 runs from Palma's Estació Intermodal on Plaça d'Espanya, stopping at Inca, Alcúdia and Port d'Alcúdia; the journey takes a little over an hour. Check times on tib.org, as the timetable changes between summer and winter.
