S'Albufera: birds and wetlands

S'Albufera Natural Park, between Alcúdia and Can Picafort, is the largest wetland in the Balearics: canals, reed beds and lagoons where more than 200 bird species live or stop over, such as herons, ospreys and, if you're lucky, flamingos. Entry is free: leave the car at the car park by the main road and walk or cycle along the main track to the Sa Roca visitor centre, with bird hides along the trails.

It's open every day from morning to late afternoon (longer in summer). Go early or around sunset, when you'll see the most birds, and bring binoculars and mosquito repellent.

To enter you need a free permit from the Sa Roca information centre: they ask how many of you there are and where you're from, and give you the map. The park opens 9 am to 6 pm from April to September and 9 am to 5 pm from October to March; the centre is open 9 am to 4 pm all year, except Christmas Day and New Year's Day. The free, unattended car park is next to the Pont dels Anglesos entrance; if it's full, park in the streets of Platja de Muro.

There are four routes, from short walks with bird hides to the perimeter route of about 12 km, and the interpretation centre is at Can Bateman, a former pumping station. You can cycle on the signposted tracks at up to 10 km/h, but dogs are not allowed. Up to 303 bird species have been recorded across its 2,036 hectares.
