Talayots: Mallorca's prehistory

Long before the Romans and Moors, Mallorca was home to the Talaiotic culture (from about 3,000 years ago), which left stone towers called talayots, walled villages and necropolises all over the island. The best ones to visit:

  • Ses Païsses (Artà): a village ringed by a cyclopean wall, among holm oaks.
  • Capocorb Vell (Llucmajor): one of the largest sites, with several talayots.
  • Son Fornés (Montuïri): with a museum that explains very well how people lived.
  • Son Real necropolis (Santa Margalida): a prehistoric cemetery by the sea, reached on a coastal walk.

They're short, quiet visits, perfect to combine with a nearby village or cove.
