Santanyí and the southeast coves

Santanyí is a village of golden stone (the famous Santanyí sandstone) with galleries, design shops and terraces on the square. Its Wednesday and Saturday morning market is one of the prettiest on the island.

Around it lies Mallorca's most photogenic stretch of coves: Cala Figuera, a fishing harbour with boathouses; Cala Llombards, Cala s'Almunia and Caló des Moro; and the Mondragó natural park, with two sandy coves and a walk through the pines. A little further south, the Cap de Ses Salines lighthouse marks Mallorca's southernmost point. In summer: coves early, village in the afternoon.

Explore guide

Caló des Moro and s'Almunia are the coves that get busiest: on peak days up to 4,000 people have come down, and in season Santanyí town hall opens extra parking in es Llombards and regulates access. Caló des Moro is also a smoke-free beach. Go first thing or outside July and August, and wear proper shoes for the rocky stretch. In the Mondragó natural park there are two car parks, at s'Amarador and ses Fonts de n'Alis, which fill by mid-morning in summer; a coastal path links the two coves.

For Santanyí's market, Saturday is the liveliest and Wednesday quieter. Park on the edge of the village and walk in. Cala Figuera is best late in the afternoon, when the boats come back, and the Cap de ses Salines lighthouse, with the Cabrera archipelago opposite, makes a good end to the day.
