Lluc Monastery

Lluc Monastery is Mallorca's spiritual heart: a sanctuary in the middle of the Serra de Tramuntana, about 500 metres up, devoted to the Mare de Déu de Lluc, "La Moreneta". Its choir, the Blauets, is one of the oldest children's choirs in Europe: they sing in the basilica at 13:15, Monday to Friday, during the school term only (not in school holidays or at weekends).

The basilica is open every day 8:30–19:30; the museum (paid) 9:00–18:00 in summer and until 17:00 in winter. There's also a small botanical garden, the Camí dels Misteris path and the start of many hiking trails, with picnic areas shaded by holm oaks. Every summer thousands walk here overnight from Palma in the "Des Güell a Lluc a peu" pilgrimage. Bring a jacket: it's cooler up here.

The basilica opens every day from 8:30 am to 7:30 pm. The Escolania, the Blauets choir, sings at 1:15 pm Monday to Friday during the school term; there is no singing in the holidays, so check before you go if that is the reason for your visit. The museum opens daily 9 am to 6 pm in summer and until 5 pm in winter, with paid entry. The Jardí Botànic de Lluc opens 9:30 am to 7 pm in summer and until 5 pm in winter, and entry is free, with a voluntary contribution.

You can stay at the sanctuary: the guesthouse has rooms in the old «porxets» and apartments, plus the Sa Fonda restaurant. Staying the night lets you see Lluc empty, at dusk and first thing, before the coaches arrive. On foot, traditional paths lead here from Sóller, Pollença and Caimari; by car, from Inca via Caimari or along the Ma-10 from Pollença or Sóller.
