Ceramics workshops and local crafts

Mallorca’s old crafts are still alive: clay siurells that double as whistles, hand-blown glass, llengües fabrics, palm baskets and Inca leather. In this guide you’ll find the workshops where you can watch them being made, buy from the makers or shape your own piece. Tip: pottery workshops run in small groups, so book before your trip.

Mallorca Local Crafts

Explore guide

Mallorca's signature pottery is the red clay of Marratxí. Potters have worked in Pòrtol and Sa Cabaneta for centuries, and their workshops (olleries) turn out greixoneres, glazed earthenware casseroles for the oven, and siurells, small white figures painted with red and green strokes that double as whistles. To see it all in one place, the Fira del Fang in Marratxí brings together potters from the island and beyond every March, for about ten days from the first weekend of the month, in Sant Marçal. Nearby, in an old mill in Sa Cabaneta, the Museu del Fang shows traditional pieces.

If you would rather make something yourself, try Taller Mostaza or La Guilda in Palma; Katinaria or Pòrtol Pots in Santa Maria del Camí, the latter a mother-and-son potting family from Pòrtol running three-hour classes; Maria De Haan's studio in Deià; or Lula Luca in Sóller, with wheels and mugs to paint. Clay has to dry and be fired, so ask when booking whether you take your piece home that day or it is sent on. Village workshops close at midday and many on Sundays.

Frequently asked questions

Where can I do a pottery class in Mallorca?

In Palma, Taller Mostaza and La Guilda; in Santa Maria del Camí, Katinaria and Pòrtol Pots; in Deià, De Haan Gallery/Studio; and in Sóller, Lula Luca. Groups are small and places go quickly, especially in high season, so book before you travel.

What is a siurell?

A small handmade clay figure, painted white with red and green strokes, with a whistle built in. Nobody is quite sure where the tradition comes from. They are made by the potters of Marratxí and sold at the Fira del Fang and in craft shops across the island.

When is the Marratxí pottery fair?

The Fira del Fang runs every March for about ten days from the first weekend of the month, in Sant Marçal, Marratxí. Potters from Mallorca, mainland Spain and abroad sell casseroles, tableware, decorative pieces and siurells, and there are workshops for children.

What is De Haan Gallery/Studio in Deià?

It is ceramicist Maria De Haan's studio in Deià, where you can make your own piece with her in a workshop. Places are limited, so get in touch well ahead to book a day and time.
