Es Firó, Moors and Christians in Sóller
View in the app · free, no sign-upEs Firó recalls 11 May 1561, when the people of Sóller fought off an attack by Ottoman-Algerian corsairs. Since 1855 the battle has been re-enacted on the Monday after the second Sunday in May, a local holiday: thousands of residents dressed as pagesos (farmers) or as Moors with blackened faces, and trabucs (black-powder blunderbusses) going off everywhere. The day, going by the 2025 programme: 15:30 Capità Angelats rallies the troops in Plaça dels Estiradors; 17:00 first landing at the port, driven back; 18:15 second landing on Platja d'en Repic, which succeeds; 19:15 battle at Pont d'en Barona; 20:30 to 21:30 the sacking of the town and the final victory in the centre, with everyone singing La Balanguera. Take the train or bus, as the road jams. Bring earplugs and clothes that can get dirty.
