Few terraces in Mallorca have this much in front of them: the façade of Sant Bartomeu, the comings and goings of Plaça de la Constitució and the wooden tram brushing past the tables on its way to the port. Ca'n Nadal, as it now calls itself, makes the most of that prime spot from first thing until dinner. Mornings bring breakfast and brunch with sourdough toast (gluten-free too), eggs, pastries and good coffee; at lunch and dinner it’s Mediterranean and Balearic cooking. The house is proud of its rice dishes, and rightly they’re what people order most: mixed paella, cuttlefish or lobster paella, a rice with aged rib steak and a brothy, spiced arròs brut that, unusually, they’ll make for one. A paella “for two” stretches further. Beyond rice, it’s worth trying the squid stuffed with prawns and vegetables on black rice, tumbet, the goat’s cheese coca with sun-dried tomato and caramelised onion, and spaghetti with sobrassada, honey and pine nuts. For pudding, La Viña-style cheesecake or homemade almond gató. Gluten-free options are well handled. It isn’t the quietest place in town, but it’s one of the few on the square where you get proper food at a fair price.
