Things to do in Sóller
24 places in and around Sóller, picked one by one by locals, each with a local tip.
Sóller is a valley closed in by the island's highest mountains, filled with orange and lemon trees, with the town in the middle and its port three kilometres away. Town life revolves around the Plaça de la Constitució, with the modernista façade of the Església de Sant Bartomeu, designed by Joan Rubió, and cafés like Bar Turismo for watching the tram go by. Just round the corner, Can Prunera is a modernista house turned museum with work by 20th-century artists.
The valley is best explored on foot: the Biniaraix path climbs a gorge of stone walls and steps towards the mountains, and other trails link hamlets and orchards. The Cooperativa Agrícola de Sóller sells the valley's olive oil and oranges. In Port de Sóller the bay is almost perfectly round and the beach calm, with a promenade and restaurants facing the water. Boats leave the Port for Sa Calobra and the Torrent de Pareis, the easiest way to get there without fighting for a parking space.
Getting there
From Palma it is about 30 minutes by car on the Ma-11 and through the Sóller tunnel. TIB buses leave from the Estació Intermodal, and the wooden Sóller train runs over the mountains from the Plaça d'Espanya station; it takes a winter break. The town centre is a camera-controlled low emission zone: park on the outskirts.
When to go
Spring and autumn are ideal for walking, and from December to March the orange trees are heavy with fruit. The market is on Saturday morning in the Plaça de la Constitució. In May, the Firó re-enacts the pirate attack of 1561 with a battle in the streets. In summer the train and the Port are packed around midday.
