At number 51 on Carrer de sa Lluna, one street back from the café terraces on the square, Can Gata fills an old Sóller stone house with vaulted ceilings and exposed beams, two small dining rooms and, at the back, a leafy cobbled garden patio where it's quiet. The name is no accident: the décor is all about cats, and a couple of real ones wander between the tables, which nearly everyone loves and the odd diner doesn't. It doubles as Sóller's FC Barcelona supporters' club. The cooking is homemade and Mallorcan, in big portions. The house dish is tumbet (layered fried vegetables), done plain, with pork loin or with salt cod; croquetas (the spinach ones are well known), seared sobrassada on pa amb oli and vermouth on tap are what people keep ordering. There are off-menu stews too, such as Mallorcan-style tongue, and for non-meat eaters, tumbet with vegan «meat» or a veggie burger. The beer list is long, with craft and international bottles, and there's a wine shop next door. Desserts are the weak spot: mostly ice cream. Service, from a small team, is kind and on the slow side.
