Port de Sóller Beach

A natural amphitheater of sea and mountains in a historic bay.

Port de Sóller's beach curves round the back of an almost enclosed, horseshoe-shaped bay, with the Tramuntana mountains behind and a lighthouse on each side of the entrance, so the water is nearly always calm, shallow and mild. It's really three stretches in a row along the seafront: Platja d'en Traves, nearest the harbour, with the wooden tram rattling past; the middle one; and Platja d'en Repic at the far end, the widest, sandiest and quietest. The strip of sand is narrow and the promenade is a few steps away, lined with bars, restaurants and shops, so it feels a bit like a town beach: very easy with children or a pushchair, with showers and good access for limited mobility, but nothing wild about it. The charm is the whole package: arriving on the tram from Sóller, about 20 minutes through orange groves, or by bus from Palma; swimming with the mountains in view; and staying for sunset, when the bay glows and the promenade fills up. What reviewers warn about: in July and August, with so many boats moored and at anchor, the water quality drops; after rain the stream that runs into the beach brings dirt with it; and prices along the front are tourist-spot prices. Beach parking is paid and scarce. Good for families and an easy swim with everything to hand; not if you're after a cove.
