Things to do in Valldemossa
21 places in and around Valldemossa, picked one by one by locals, each with a local tip.
Valldemossa is a mountain village just over half an hour from Palma, with stone houses, flowerpots at every door and steep lanes climbing towards the Cartoixa de Valldemossa. Frédéric Chopin and George Sand spent the winter of 1838 to 1839 at the charterhouse, and you can visit its cells, the cloister and the old pharmacy; the Museu Chopin i George Sand tells the story of that stay.
Beyond the centre, the mountains take over. The Camí de s'Arxiduc follows a ridge with views over the sea, and the road towards Deià passes the Monestir de Miramar, where Ramon Llull founded a school in the 13th century. Down a narrow, winding road is Port de Valldemossa, a pebbly cove with the Es Port restaurant by the water. In the village, the potato cocas from Ca'n Molinas go with your coffee, and small shops like Es Molinet sell local produce. It is a village to wander without hurrying, best once the coaches have gone.
Getting there
From Palma it is about 30 minutes by car on the Ma-1110, a mountain road. TIB buses leave from Palma's Estació Intermodal and carry on to Deià and Sóller; in summer they are full. Paid car parks at the entrance to the village fill by mid-morning. The road to the Port is very narrow, with little parking.
When to go
Spring and autumn, for the village and for walking in the mountains. Early morning and late afternoon, once the day trips leave, are the quietest times. The market is on Sunday morning. On 28 July the Beata festival brings the Carro Triomfal through the streets. Winters are cool and some places close.
