Valldemossa Charterhouse and Chopin
The Cartoixa de Valldemossa (Royal Charterhouse) is the village's most visited monument. It was a Carthusian monastery, and after the monks left its cells were rented out to travellers: in the winter of 1838-1839 Frédéric Chopin and the writer George Sand stayed there, which she described in "A Winter in Majorca". Today you can see the cells with mementos of both (including one of Chopin's pianos), the monks' old pharmacy, the church and gardens overlooking the valley.
It opens Monday to Saturday: Monday to Friday 10:00–17:00 and Saturdays 11:00–16:00. It's closed on Sundays, so don't leave it for that day.
Your ticket includes a Chopin piano recital of about 15 minutes by Carlos Bonnín in King Sancho's Palace, at 10:30, 11:30, 12:30, 13:15 and 14:15. Go first thing or late in the day, after the tour groups leave.
It helps to know that the Charterhouse has two separate visits. The general ticket covers the church, the pharmacy, the cloister, King Sancho's Palace and the piano recitals, around 15 minutes long and held several times through the morning. Chopin's cell, the Museu Chopin i George Sand, is run separately and has its own ticket: if his piano and manuscripts are what you came for, don't skip it thinking you've already seen it.
In August, the International Chopin Festival, running since 1930, holds evening concerts in the cloister. Without a car, TIB line 203 links Palma with Valldemossa and carries on to Deià and Port de Sóller; parking in the village mid-morning is hard. For lunch, step away from the main street or drive on to Deià, about 20 minutes along the coast road. On Sunday mornings there's a market and the village gets busy.

The Charterhouse visit includes short recitals of Chopin's music, around 15 minutes, several times each morning. In August, the International Chopin Festival puts on evening concerts in the cloister.
