On Plaça de la Cartoixa, facing Valldemossa's Charterhouse, Barbaflorida is a small, carefully kept café with a couple of tables by windows that look onto the square and a terrace outside that catches the breeze on hot days. A couple run it, she out front and he — the chef — in the kitchen, and a Canarian touch slips into the menu here and there. The house stands for specialty coffee roasted on the island — they suggest trying it black, without sugar, to taste it properly — homemade food made fresh each day and local, organic produce. Mornings are about eggs Benedict, toasts (avocado, for instance) and llonguets, the Mallorcan bread roll, with sobrassada; at lunch, the gnocchi, which is what people order most, focaccia, burgers — including a much-praised vegan one — and homemade chips. The cakes on the counter change: carrot cake, Mallorcan almond gató and sponges. There are plant milks and gluten-free options. Inside it's small and can be noisy; outside on the square is nicer. In a village this busy with visitors, eating well here at a fair price counts for a lot.
