Eating well in Valldemossa

Central Valldemossa has plenty of tourist menus; these are the places that don't disappoint:

  • Ca'n Molinas: family bakery since 1920. This is where to eat coca de patata, in its inner patio if the weather is nice.
  • QuitaPenas: tiny and unsigned, on Carrer Vell. Country-bread toasts to share with a local wine.
  • Barbaflorida Cafè: on Plaça de la Cartoixa, home cooking and specialty coffee.
  • Hostal Can Marió: classic Mallorcan cooking (arròs brut, sopes) with big windows onto the mountains.
  • Es Taller: a former car workshop with creative food; order the suckling pig. Book for dinner.

By car: Can Costa, on the Deià road (km 2.5), with arròs brut and roast suckling pig in an old olive mill, or Es Port, down in Port de Valldemossa, for its paella (6 km of narrow, winding road).

The street climbing from the main road up to the Charterhouse is lined with terraces aimed at coach groups; the places on this list are on side streets or just outside the village. To eat without queuing, sit down at 1pm or after 3pm, once the day-trip coaches have left, and book at weekends or for dinner: out of season very little in Valldemossa stays open in the evening.

Coca de patata is the village's own sweet, a soft potato bun eaten with hot chocolate or coffee. At Ca'n Molinas, baking since 1920, the apricot version often sells out during the day, so go in the morning. On Sundays there is a market on Plaça de la Cartoixa from 9am to 2pm. Without a car, TIB bus 203 gets you from Palma in about 35 minutes; with one, parking is what eats up your time, especially mid-morning.

Frequently asked questions

Where can I get coca de patata in Valldemossa?

Ca'n Molinas, a family bakery since 1920, is the best known: its bakehouse is on Carrer de la Rosa and it has a shop with a garden in the pedestrian centre. The apricot one is the favourite and can run out, so go in the morning.

Do I need to book a restaurant in Valldemossa?

On a weekday lunchtime you will usually find a table if you arrive early, but at weekends, in summer and for dinner it is worth booking. The better kitchens are small, and out of season several close in the evening.

When is Valldemossa market?

On Sunday mornings, roughly 9am to 2pm, on Plaça de la Cartoixa, with local produce, crafts and often coca de patata. The village is busier that day and parking is harder, so arrive early or take the bus.
