Can Costa
1400s olive mill: timeless Mallorcan slow food and tranquil mountain views.
View in the app · free, no sign-upTwo and a half kilometres out of Valldemossa on the Deià road, Can Costa is the big Mallorcan dining room of the area: a stone house with beams, old farm tools and the former tafona (olive mill) inside, plus a large terrace surrounded by greenery. Since 2020 it has been run by Antonia and Jose, a Valldemossa family raised in the Tramuntana who decided to give a new lease of life to a restaurant the village already knew well.
The kitchen goes two ways. One is the island repertoire: arròs brut, a brothy, spiced rice, is the house dish and the one you see on most tables, alongside roast suckling pig (lechona), frit mallorquí, tumbet, snails and, on the right dates, the Christmas sopa rellena. The other is the grill and celebration rice: lobster paella and soupy seafood rice with the lobster split in half, Iberian secreto, dry-aged Angus entrecôte or a one-kilo Galician rubia T-bone to share. The suckling pig has better and worse days and can come out dry; the arròs brut and the lobster rices are the safe bet. There's a vegan paella and a vegan dessert, and gluten-free bread.
The wine list is more serious than you'd expect from a roadside eating house: around 120 references, with a good share of Mallorcan whites and reds and a few very serious bottles. In autumn there are dinners with live music (funk, bossa nova, bolero), and the house is hired out for weddings and parties. With valet parking and a free private car park, it's one of the easiest places for a family or group lunch after a morning in the mountains.
