A day from Valldemossa to Deià
One of the loveliest stretches of the Tramuntana, to enjoy slowly in one day:
1. Morning in Valldemossa: coffee and coca de patata at Ca'n Molinas, a family bakery since 1920, and a visit to the Cartoixa, where Chopin and George Sand spent the winter of 1838.
2. The road to Deià: stop at Son Marroig, the Archduke Ludwig Salvator's house, with its marble temple and Sa Foradada in front. If you feel like it, walk down to the rock with the hole.
3. Lunch at Cala Deià: fish on the rocks at Ca's Patró March (book) and a swim in the cove's clear water.
4. Evening in Deià: a stroll through the village and dinner at Bistro Rullan, or something more casual at Café Miró, at La Residencia.
Tip: get to Valldemossa early, before the coaches, and bear in mind that parking in Deià is very limited.
Valldemossa and Deià are about 10 kilometres apart on the Ma-10, a winding coast road where it is better to stop at the viewpoints than on the verge. Without a car, TIB bus 203, which runs from Palma to Port de Sóller, stops in both villages, so you can ride up to Valldemossa in the morning and head back from Deià in the afternoon. On foot, the GR 221 stage between them takes about four hours over the hills, with plenty of climbing.
Son Marroig charges a small entry fee for its museum, which closes before sunset. The dirt track down to Sa Foradada starts at the estate and takes around two and a half hours there and back, with the climb at the end. Cala Deià has a small pay car park from April to October that fills early; from the village you can walk down in about half an hour.
