Cala Magraner
Rugged cove with unique deep water soloing; perfect for adventurous climbers.
View in the app · free, no sign-upCala Magraner is the biggest and the furthest of a string of road-free coves between Porto Cristo and Cales de Mallorca: Cala Bota, Cala Virgili, Cala Pilota and Magraner, each at the end of its own torrent bed. It has around 60 metres of gravel and stone with little sand, turquoise water over a rocky bottom, and on one side a sheer limestone wall full of climbing routes, so you often swim with climbers hanging above you. It lies within a protected natural area (ANEI). You walk in from the MA-4014 road near Cala Bota: about 2.5 kilometres, two thirds flat and the rest over loose stone, with no shade at all, 30 to 45 minutes. Side paths branch off to the other coves and are poorly signed, and Google Maps mixes up Virgili and Magraner, so plenty of people walk an extra 20 minutes. The rocks on either side are good for snorkelling, there are spots to jump from and you can swim round to the next cove, which has caves. There are no facilities or parasols; nudism is common and yachts anchor here in summer. The recurring downside along this stretch: after storms, seaweed, plastic and smelly debris wash in, and some days there are jellyfish. The coast path carries on to Cala Romàntica, about 45 minutes more. It suits walkers with proper shoes who want peace, not anyone hauling a cool box and parasol.
