Caló d'en Monjo

A tiny U-shaped cove, about 15 m long and 4 m wide

Caló des Monjo is a narrow inlet between pines and rock just west of Cala Fornells, on the border between Calvià and Andratx. Rather than one beach it's three spots for a swim: a strip of round pebbles a couple of metres wide at the back, flat rocks, and an old concrete jetty on the left where the naturists tend to settle. There's no sand to plant a parasol, but the pines reach the edge and give shade, especially in the afternoon. No road comes down: you park in Cala Fornells and walk 15 to 20 minutes along a pine-wood path with loose stones and the odd climb (from Camp de Mar it's about 45). The water is so clear you can see the bottom from the shore, and it's one of the best snorkelling spots in the south-west: fish and octopus in shallow water, with the Malgrats islands, a marine reserve, out in the bay. There are rocks to jump from and deep-water soloing routes, and scenes from Evil Under the Sun (1982) are said to have been shot here. What reviewers warn about: getting in means slippery stones, there's room for very few people, it fills up unless you're early, and when a swell comes in the water turns cloudy. No facilities of any kind. Great for snorkellers, couples and dog owners; with small children or a pushchair, the path feels long.
