Bellver Castle: hours and getting there

Bellver Castle is one of the few circular Gothic castles in Europe, built in the early 14th century by King Jaume II on a pine-covered hill. Its terraces give you the best view over the bay and the city, and inside is Palma's history museum.

It opens Tuesday to Sunday (closed Mondays): Tuesday to Saturday until 6 pm in winter and 7 pm in summer, and until 3 pm on Sundays and holidays. General admission is €4 and free on Sundays. You can drive or take a taxi to the top, or walk up through the woods from El Terreno (20-30 minutes uphill). At sunset the views are picture-perfect.

Tickets are sold at the visitor reception centre in the car park area until 45 minutes before closing, and last entry is half an hour before. The reduced ticket is €2 (pensioners, young people aged 14 to 18) and under-14s go free. It closes on 1 January, Easter Sunday, 1 May and 25 December, and hours may change for city council events.

Without a car, the sightseeing bus (line 50) stops at the castle itself. By EMT city bus, line 46 drops you in Plaça Gomila, from where it is about a 20-minute walk up the Bellver road and some steps. Once inside, climb to the roof terrace: from there you see the whole bay, the port and the Serra de Tramuntana. Sunday is free but closes at 3 pm, so go in the morning. The Fundació Miró in Cala Major is close by to round off the day.
