Rainy Day in Mallorca

Museums, palaces, and cozy spots to enjoy the island when the sky turns grey.

Palma is the best place to sit out a wet day, as most of what is worth seeing is a short walk apart. An easy loop: the Fundación Juan March on Carrer de Sant Miquel, with Picasso, Miró and Dalí and free entry; CaixaForum on Plaça Weyler, ten minutes away; and Es Baluard, built into the old sea walls, open Tuesday to Saturday 10am–8pm and Sunday until 3pm. On Fridays Es Baluard is pay-what-you-like, from €0.10.

Mind the closing days: most museums shut on Mondays, and the Juan March closes on Sundays and public holidays. If the rain sets in for the afternoon, CineCiutat shows films in their original language, which is rare on the island. Outside Palma, the Museu Chopin i George Sand is inside the Valldemossa Charterhouse, and Sa Bassa Blanca, on Alcúdia's Cap des Pinar, only opens on certain days of the week, so check its website first.

Frequently asked questions

Which museums in Palma are free?

The Fundación Juan March on Carrer de Sant Miquel is free and shows Picasso, Miró and Dalí. Es Baluard runs a «Tú decides» scheme on Fridays, so you pay what you think is fair from €0.10. Several museums also open free on special days such as International Museum Day.

Are museums in Mallorca closed on Mondays?

Many are. Es Baluard is closed on Mondays and opens Tuesday to Sunday. The Fundación Juan March works the other way round: open Monday to Saturday, closed on Sundays and public holidays. If your rainy day is a Monday, check each museum's hours before setting off.

Where can I watch films in English in Palma?

CineCiutat in Palma screens films in their original language with subtitles, as well as classics and themed seasons. It is a good bet for a rainy afternoon, especially if your Spanish is not up to a dubbed film.
