Cala d'Estellencs

Estellencs' village cove, below Puig de Galatzó

The cove of Estellencs village, at the foot of the Galatzó, is a small U of round boulders and rock with no sand at all, stone fishermen's huts, concrete boat ramps and a ladder into the water. At the back the Son Fortuny torrent runs out and, when it's flowing, spills over the stones; and jets of fresh water spring from the rock face and serve as a natural shower – the detail people who know it remember most. The seabed is rocky, uneven and deep almost at once; when the sea is clear the snorkelling is excellent – colourful fish, crabs, posidonia. There are two ways down. On foot from the village along the Camí de la Mar, between terraces of olive and orange trees, about 30–40 minutes down and the same back up. Or by car along an extremely narrow road where you have to pull over to pass, to a rough terraced car park with very few spaces. In season a bar with a terrace opens above the cove; it closes in winter. Worth knowing: it faces west and north, and with wind from those directions the sea turns rough fast, with waves and seaweed; there's nearly always a jellyfish or two; the stones are sharp; and since it hit Instagram, in August you can barely see the rocks for people. Dogs aren't allowed down to the cove. It's not for small children or a full day on a towel, but it's perfect for a swim with a mask and a sunset over the sea.
