Cala Gata
A wild rocky cove with sunsets, only when the sea is calm.
View in the app · free, no sign-upCala Gata is a small cove of pebbles and smooth rock on the Banyalbufar coast, near Son Bunyola, below the coast path between Banyalbufar and Port des Canonge. There is no road and there are no facilities, and the water shifts from blue to jade green over a clear bottom full of fish. It faces north-west: in summer the sun sets over the sea and the sunsets are what people remember most, but it also takes the swell and the northerly wind, and the waves can be very big for Mallorca. The coast path, largely shaded and with views of the Tramuntana, is a pleasant walk; the descent to the cove is another matter. Several recent reviews warn of rockfalls, of very crumbly rock that slips even on the big blocks and of paths that have disappeared; some could not find a way down from Port des Canonge, and one mentions a private stretch. So this is a cove for people with mountain experience and proper footwear, or one to admire from above on the walk, not for children or a casual try in flip-flops. If you do get down, water shoes and a mask are essential. You can extend the walk to Port des Canonge, with its fishermen's boathouses and a restaurant for lunch afterwards.
