Tramuntana Coves

Perfect for snorkeling in crystal-clear depths or enjoying a sunset from a natural pier, each cove is a testament to the island's raw Mediterranean soul.

Almost all these coves are pebbles and rock, with no sand and few or no facilities, and they face north or west: with a north wind or a swell the waves come straight in, so save them for another day. In return, the water is very clear and good for snorkelling. Bring water shoes and some shade. At Cala Deià you can drive down to a small paid car park about 150 metres from the water, which fills fast in season; from the village it's a 35 to 40-minute walk. Cala Tuent has around 100 spaces and far more cars arrive in August: go early. Its restaurant, Es Vergeret, closes from November to February.

Port des Canonge and Es Port, Valldemossa's little harbour, are reached by narrow, winding roads. Cala Gata and Caló de s'Estaca can only be reached on foot: the first along the coastal path from Port des Canonge, the second on 5 to 7 km trails with up to 500 metres of climbing.

Frequently asked questions

Can you park at Cala Deià?

Yes, but space is tight: a small paid car park at the end of the road, about 150 metres from the cove, which fills early between April and October. The alternative is walking down from Deià, about 35 to 40 minutes.

How do you get to Caló de s'Estaca?

Only on foot. Trails start from the Valldemossa area, following the paths laid out by Archduke Ludwig Salvator, and run 5 to 7 km with up to 500 metres of climbing and some slippery stretches. Wear proper shoes and bring water.

When is the best time to swim in the Tramuntana coves?

On calm days with no north wind, from June to early October. When the tramuntana blows, waves roll straight into these rocky coves. Early in the morning there are fewer people and parking is easier at the ones you can drive to.
