Cala Tuent
A shingle cove with emerald water below Puig Major, away from the crowds.
View in the app · free, no sign-upCala Tuent is where people go when they don't want Sa Calobra: it sits in the same Escorca valley, one turn earlier, but without the coaches or the tour boats landing. It's an open beach of small pebbles and gravel, no sand, with very clean emerald-green water and, behind it, the wall of the Puig Major, the island's highest mountain. What sticks in the memory is the view from the water: the crags seem to tumble down onto the cove, with pines and olive trees almost reaching the shore and a lone pine in the middle of the beach. You get there on the Sa Calobra road – well surfaced but an endless run of hairpins, with cyclists and buses – and the final turn-off drops to a pay car park about five minutes' walk away. On the beach there's no bar, no lifeguard and no toilets: the hut you see belongs to fishermen. Shade is scarce, under the pines or on the west side by the mountain. On the far side of the pinewood, a few minutes' walk, Es Vergeret restaurant has a terrace looking over the whole cove. In a calm sea it's very good for snorkelling over rock and stone, but this north coast is often choppy, some days bring jellyfish and in summer boats anchor offshore. At sunset the sun drops into the sea. It's for a quiet day of sea and mountains, for couples and families who don't need facilities; not for sand lovers or anyone who gets carsick on bends.
