After the hairpins of the Sa Calobra road, the turn-off for Cala Tuent leads to the other side of the story: a quiet cove and, on the hillside, Es Vergeret, built more than four decades ago on an old estate of the same name. Its big terrace, shaded by pines, looks over the cove, the open sea and the bulk of the Puig Major, and that's why people seek it out. The cooking is rice and seafood, without fuss: mixed paella, black paella and black rice are the biggest sellers, along with fideuà, soupy rice dishes and the fish of the day, which is the safest bet. To start, squid (stuffed, too), mussels and croquettes, and fried seafood. For dessert, cheesecake or the Mallorcan almond sponge. Prices are fair for a place with no competition around it, though paellas come for a minimum of two and occasionally fall short of what's promised. It's the natural stop for anyone heading down to swim at Cala Tuent, five minutes' walk away, or for hikers arriving along the coastal paths. Above the restaurant there's an apartment to rent for ten people.
